Teaching

With over 15 years of experience at academic institutions - primary, secondary and undergraduate level - I specialise in teaching creative writing (poetry & fiction) and translating poetry from Spanish and French. As a writer and linguist, my work is fuelled by a belief in language and languages as a communication bridge between diverse cultures and experiences.

I offer bespoke workshops, talks, residencies and mentoring for adults and students. Please contact me here.

The Poetry School

I design and teach regular online and face-to-face poetry courses with The Poetry School, the UK’s largest provider of poetry education. Recent courses have included The Poet’s Toolkit, Bending Form; Beyond the Self: The Persona Poem; Hearing Voices: World Poetry in Translation; and The Poet as Curator.

Translators in Schools

A graduate of the pilot Translators in Schools programme, I design and deliver bespoke translation (from Spanish & French) and creative writing sessions in schools. In 2017 I was one of four translators chosen for a new programme, Creative Translation in the Classroom, which involved collaborating with secondary school teachers to co-deliver a project I developed.

English PEN

From 2010-2016 I worked with English PEN on their Readers & Writers outreach programme, facilitating creative writing/reading workshops in refugee centres, schools and prisons. I am currently a trustee on their Board.

“Shazea (is) the most generous and professional tutor I’m come across: so good at managing group dynamics, encouraging really focused, rigorous responses while workshopping, following up with great, relevant resources. And making sure everybody had a voice / space to speak.”
